Entrepreneurs Select Associates With a “Strong Desire To Succeed”

Entrepreneurs engaged in selecting associates to work with on their team need to choose people who exhibit a “Strong Desire to Succeed.”

Do you get up in the morning ready to make a difference?  Are you excited about going to work?  Do you have energy in your voice when you answer the phone?  Are you enthusiastic about helping people?  Are you excited about life?  If you are a successful entrepreneur, you probably answered “yes” to all of these questions.

When you engage people to work with you on your team, don’t you want  people who can answer “yes” to the same questions?  Select associates who exhibit a “Strong Desire to Succeed.”

Once you have chosen a person with a strong desire, you can train himor her to do the specific job.  Without the strong desire, though, you waste your time and resources.  Be selective, choose people with a “strong desire to succeed!”

  1. Hi Linda,

We are definitely in the sorting business. I would much rather perfer working with people who share the same desires as I do oppose to working with someone who has a limited mindset that hasn’t been doing them any good.

Hey…the good news is those people can change to, if they want to.

    Thanks for sharing this…

      Hi Jerome,
Somehow I feel that my burning desire to help people and do the right thing is innate. And these are the kinds of people that successful entrepreneurs should attract. Unfortunately, a busy enterprise may have a need to fill a position, and could be in too big of a rush, or the people interviewing may miss this vital trait!
Thanks for your comments, Jerome, and I look forward to next time!

This could save many people a lot of time trying to get people motivated!

Those of us who are achievers definitely fit your criteria. There is another factor in success, and that is commitment. I see too many people with a strong desire switching camps just as they start to reap the rewards of all their hard work.

It takes time to build a strong presence. For most, thbis is the reason they don’t seem to get the results of the big boys and girls. Like it or not, some people just don’t have the desire to succeed.

      Hi John,
You are right on…I think that there are many words that help describe “strong desire,” such as motivated, achiever, high energy, etc., like you point out. Yes, and investing time in people to get them trained and fully achieving can be costly, so it is important to know if the candidate is truly in a great match of desire for success in this particular opening.
Looking forward to more great connections with you, John.

  4. Hi Linda,

You’re spot on! If someone doesn’t have the DESIRE to succeed, there’s not much you can do, as everything starts with the individual first. It’s truly about having the right mindset more than skills. There’s nothing one won’t do to achieve success when one is highly motivated :) .

      Hi Janette,
One time while HR consulting, I had to transition a HR Benefits position by learning from the predecessor and personally filling the position until a new hire could be identified and trained. Well, the person in that position was so lethargic that it was hard for me to learn. What seemed like rocket science when she explained things turned out to be a breeze once things got organized. I guess that position just was not a match for her, but her lack of desire and motivation made it difficult for me to transition!
Looking forward to hearing from you again, Janette!

  5. I have to agree with you Linda. Desire is number one on the list IMO. Without desire action will not take place. I would take some with desire over confidence for example. I really like the short, to the point post you wrote. So many bloggers do these marathon posts, and even if they are good, I start to lose interest and move on.

LOL, I have been known to have a mix, of long posts as well as short, as sometimes I just cannot convey all of the message without length.
I’ll keep your comments in mind and try to find a way to keep the messages brief. I agree, some posts I do not feel like reading if they are not about a subject that interests me, or if they are too long!
      Point well taken, my friend!

      Hi Lani,
“Strength from within will emanate outward.” I love it. I guess the tough part is learning what kind of inward strength a person has when selecting your team. I like to exercise patience, understanding, and kindness, but I don’t want it to have to be my focus because someone does not have the internal desire to succeed.
We’ll be in touch again, my friend. Linda

  7. Linda great blog and great advice. I’ve heard more than one Network Marketing Trainer say,”Sponsor up not down.” Todd Falcone has amassed a fortune dealing with totally professional people like Realtors who know how to hustle when it comes to building a business.

    • Linda Thomas says:

      Hi Dan,
There is an idea…engage people that are from a profession where they have to have a strong desire in order to succeed.
Well, a background where hustling is a starting point… I do know some realtors, (for example) who also got burned out, or never learned to hustle, and so additional criteria must be measured.

    Hi Linda,

This sounds right to me. If your folks don’t have the internal drive, I would think you’d be asking for trouble. While you might be able to motivate them temporarily you certainly can’t be there pushing them all of the time. That would make them extremely high maintenance folks.

      Hi Linnea,
Yes, and high maintenance folks would not be much fun from which to grow your vision! Even if you can get them to buy into the mission, the internal will or desire to succeed has to come from within. Surround yourself with Entrepreneurs!

  9. Linda,
Excellent point…. there are millions of people in the world who wish their life was different….and much fewer who have the desire it takes to go out and get it done.

      Hi Robin,
Great way to state it! How many have the desire to go out and get it done may depend on a lot of things like timing, need, match of the mission, etc. So hopefully, people will either create or find their mission match that is in alignment with their passion or purpose!
Keep on keeping on, Robin! ;-) Linda

Hi Gary, LOL, testing is something we have to be careful with… The best way to learn about whether someone has a strong desire or not is to ask questions and watch their body language. I agree that possibly phone interview screening could narrow the list significantly! Great to hear from you. Linda

  13. Linda,
You have written about the one main characteristic that all entrepreneurs must have to succeed. So as you said, you don’t want anyone on your team who does not possess this quality. It is not something you can teach. It has to be part of them. If they don’t possess the strong desire to succeed yet, they can develop it but only if they decide to.
Thanks for reminding us when to say “next” and keep looking.

  14. Strong desire is listed as the 1st step to riches in the classic book “Think and Grow Rich.” Also we find the story of Edwin Barnes and his desire to be the business associate of the the great inventor, Thomas Edison. Thanks for reminding us of Strong Desire, the key characteristic in choosing associates.

    Hello Linda,

Our desire to succeed certainly plays in my evaluation the most important characteristic we must possess to accomplish great things. Without that burning desire, we become defeated to soon to SUCCEED.

Success has a very simple equation: KNOWLEDGE + ACTION + POSITIVE ATTITUDE = SUCCESS. Mind is all that counts. You can be whatever you make up your mind to be.

      Hi Lloyd,
Great to see you, and thanks for the Success equation!
I was just reading a successful entrepreneur, Harry Rosen, who is Chairman for
50 mens stores across Canada. He said that he feels that there is an innate ability
to be successful in his stores. He said that even though he would sponsor events
and present awards, it was the same people that won them time and time again!
So he said it is management’s job to push buttons for improved productivity. He
said he had to bring those people over to his way of thinking!
