How To Avoid Home Business Burn Out

Prepare a Written Business Plan

Take some time and think through your Business Plan. Write out your Goals and Purposes.
Your Goals need to be realistic, specific, and measurable. Your Purposes are the outcome you want to achieve, and how this will apply in your life. Generally your purposes are what your achievements will mean to enhancing relationships with family and loved ones.
Prepare your Work Schedule, the time frames that you will be setting aside to work in your business.
Accurately prepare your Personal Evaluation, such as your resources, your time, and your skills.
Your Marketing Plan is where you will define your target market along with how you will find them and how you will contact them.

Set Realistic Expectations

Discipline is very important when running a home-based business; however, if you have expectations that re impossible for one person to accomplish, you are putting yourself on the fast track to burn out.

Create Boundaries

Starting a home-based business takes commitment and dedication. Giving 110% of yourself in the beginning will reap HUGE rewards for months and years to come, compared to the employee who clocks in and out until they are 67 years old. Creating boundaries in the beginning of your business will ensure you have the time and focus to build a successful, profitable business. Share your goals with friends and family and include them in your achievements. You will find that they will be supportive of your business when you celebrate with them the milestones along the way.

Create a Calendar and Use It Regularly

It is incredibly important to set aside time to work your business. Use your calendar and write everything down so you can have a better understanding of what is ahead. Follow your Business Plan and be specific and set priorities as well as goals to be accomplished.

Delegate

If you try to do everything, you will end up burned out and frustrated with the lack of results. Set priorities, and see exactly what needs to be done both personally and professionally.
Enlist help as needed.
Delegate those tasks that drain your energy, and schedule the others at times when you feel you have the most energy to do them.

Have a Support System

Having people you can turn to that have a commonality with you is a great asset for any home-based business owner. Connect with other people in your business niche, whether within your own company, through your Better Business Bureau, or online. As for online, a great resource is joining a network of like-minded business people.

Take Care of Yourself

Make sure you are eating healthy, exercising, and drinking plenty of water. Not only will this give you added energy, it will help you avoid getting sick, which equates to less down time.
Take power naps, if needed. It is difficult attempting to be brilliant when you are completely exhausted. Get the rest you need so you can be at the top of your game.
Schedule alone time. Make sure to create time, at least once a week to get away from home and work. And remember, if you don’t schedule it in, it more than likely won’t happen.
It is also very important to get away at least once a quarter. Making time to relax and recharge will do wonders for your business.
Schedule a vacation once a year. Understanding just how important it is for you to recharge and renew your spirits and morale will help you set this priority in a high position.

Enjoy the Journey

It is very easy to always concentrate on the never ending to-do list or the rejections. Make sure you schedule in time, at least twice a month, to review your Business and Marketing Plans to realize the goals you have met and accomplishments you have achieved. It is probably time for a mini celebration with family and friends. Forget about burn out and enjoy the journey.

    Linda,
I have definitely experienced business burnout. In fact, I created an elaborate one year marketing plan and felt a strong sense of overwhelm when it was completed. All the details of what I can do put me face to face with having so much to do that it felt impossible. I felt a burnout after having completed this marvelous detailed plan.
Now I am rethinking the marketing plan and deciding what are my priorities right now and what is really a future oriented goal.

      Hi Dr. Erica,
I really enjoyed your comments. I have recently gone through a time with my daughter, as she experienced career burnout. She is such an achiever, and has done very well for herself, but is ready to find herself and create something different to do!
Isn’t that amazing that putting your plan on paper has allowed for you to re-examine which things are most important for your goals.
I am sure you will get it figure out and looking forward to learning your successes on the other side!
      All the best, Linda

    Hey Linda my friend.

This is wonderful information. I reckon everyone who reads this will find something of relevance.

For me it is outsourcing. I have a big block on that, even though Mike Dillard told me to do it over 5 years ago! I mean personally, not on a blog post.

There are many more things that I needed to be reminded of here, especially scheduling and having regular checkups on the marketing plan.

Guess once I get the outsourcing happening I will have time for all those other things.

BUrnout – yes, it is a challenge for home busines owners.

      Hi John,
Great to hear from you, and I know you must max out on all that you are achieving! I know you do a great job with it, as you take
time for family and fitness. I agree, when it’s your home business, there is no one to delegate to, so most of us just do it ourselves.
Outsource, and don’t allow yourself to burn out!
      All the best, Linda

Great advice. Unfortunately, I did not heed many of the suggestions you offered and I did crash and burn early this year and have not fully recovered even though I am doing much less myself. Mainly, I rarely took time to really reward and nuture myself for achieving wins in my business. Lesson learned: If I don’t take the time to really reward myself and get support in my business, I will burn out and stop creating value.

Thanks Linda, a great set of guidelines for any home based business success. Enjoying the journey is probably the most important one on the list. If you can’t enjoy what you are doing then why the heck are you doing it. I’d even go so far as to say you should be having fun at what your doing and that will set you miles apart from any J.O.B you could have.

Wonderful advice here Linda. I know the perils of having your own business very well. Boundaries are so important. When working from your home office, people get the impression that you are home and have time to talk, or socialize. That was one of the biggest challenges I had to face. But I agree with Rick Lelchuk in the comment above that Enjoying the journey is the backbone of it all. If you are not enjoying what you do, find something else! Thank you for this great information that will help many. Blessings, Donna

Just this week I was thinking about the fact that I had a pretty good plan laid out back in April. Now it’s mid September and I am thinking about how I deviated from the plan to “lunge ahead.” There are repercussions! So, remembering to follow your plan (in your first point), or at least asking, “What are the real pros and cons of changing the plan?” is something worth considering.

Hi Linda, I’ve just started to see how taking care of yourself can help my business. I’ve actually started to get more sleep at night instead of working throughout the night and trying to work in the mornings too. I get so much more done just in the mornings so my favorite part of your post is taking care of yourself. Commitment and dedication is also a favorite of mine. Keep the tips coming!

Hi Rick, great to hear from you, as always. Wow, sounds like you have made some changes, and they are working! How cool! Sometimes I still find myself in the wee hours of the morning, and it feels like college days all over again. But for the most part, if we do what we should during normal working hours, then we should be able to have normal sleeping hours.
      All the best, Linda
